Paul Edward Haggis (born in March 1953) is a Canadian director, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known as the screenwriter and producer who obtained back to back (consecutive) Best Picture Oscar Awards. He won for the films: Million Dollar Baby (2004) and Crash (2005), the latter of which he also directed.

With Million Dollar Baby, as critics have stated, it won an Oscar Award because it is arguably not a mere pro-euthanasia propaganda. It is a well-crafted, effective, and popular film that takes a profoundly sympathetic and ultimately affirmative view of euthanasia. But, it is also deeply troubling and could be potentially harmful if some people say that it provides a okay justification for death. In a society in which quality of life can be valued more than life itself, it may not be easy to say that this film gives a real look at how death is or will be handled in the American society.

The film Crash got the 2005 Best Picture Oscar, but it is frequently cited as the least deserving film ever to win a Best Picture Oscar. Crash beat the trail blazing gay love story Brokeback Mountain in 2006. Crash has been called a picture that trades in on the U.S. eternal problem with race relations without actually offering any substance. Even the film's director Paul Haggis said he didn't think Crash deserved an Oscar. A 2015 poll of Academy voters asking them to reassess past decisions had members reversing their decision and giving the award to Ang Lee's film, Brokeback.
