Pierre de Frédy, baron de Coubertin (1 January 1863 – 2 September 1937) was a French educator and historian. He is best known in the world as the founder of the International Olympic Committee.

Born into an aristocratic family, he became an academic and studied a various topics, including education and history. Pierre always attached great importance to sport and believed it is a necessary element of the healthy way of life.

Coubertin pondered a lot over the idea of conducting an international competition in various kinds of sports and on November 25, 1892 he presented his report on the revival of the Olympic tradition in the University of Paris. The first modern Olympic games took place in 1896 in Athens.
