William Francis Sutton, Jr., known as Willie Sutton, was born on June 30, 1901 in Brooklyn New York. He was an American bank robber who stole about 2 million dollars throughout his 40 year career. His life of crime started at a young age. Usually wearing a disguise and carrying an unloaded gun, Willie usually robbed his banks in the morning. He was imprisoned four times throughout his life, and had several breakouts and recaptures. He spent most of his adult life in prison. In 1970, he was finally released because of health issues and good behavior.

After his release, Sutton lectured on prison reform and worked with banks on theft deterrent techniques. He is claimed to have answered the question asked of him "Why do you rob banks?" with, "Cause that's where the money is!". Sutton's Law came about because of that question. It states that the medical providers first look at the obvious. It suggests that one should first conduct tests that either confirm or rule out a diagnosis. The law is taught in medical schools to students that they might best order tests in that sequence which is most likely to result in a quick diagnosis and then treatment, while minimizing unnecessary costs. It is ironic how Sutton's Law has SAVED millions of dollars.
