Shirley Temple Black was best known as a child actress in the 30’s and 40’s. She was Hollywood's number one box-office star from 1935 to 1938. Shirley began her film career in 1932 at age 3. In 1934, as a 5 year old she reached international fame in Bright Eyes, a feature film designed specifically for her talents. She received a special Juvenile Academy Award in 1935 for her outstanding contribution as a juvenile performer to motion pictures during 1934, that included film hits such as Curly Top and Heidi. She retired from making films in 1950.

As an adult she began a diplomatic career in 1969, with an appointment to represent the United States at a session of the United Nations General Assembly. She was named United States ambassador to Ghana in 1974 and later Chief of Protocol of the United States in 1976 by President Gerald Ford. President George H. W. Bush named her ambassador to Czechoslovakia in 1989.
