Mariah Carey is a well-known American singer, record producer, songwriter and actress born in 1969. Her single "Vision of Love" from her debut album made her famous in 1990, and her fruitful music career began. The album produced four chart-topping singles in the US and began what would become a string of commercially successful albums which solidified the singer as Columbia's highest selling act.

Mariah was born in Huntington, New York to an Irish-American mother and African American/Venezuelan father. She was interested in music from her young age, moreover, she was destined to sing, as she was named after "They Call The Wind Mariah," a song from the musical "Paint Your Wagon." Her mother was an opera singer, who taught Mariah to sing and gave her the first voice lesson at the age of 4. Before becoming a star, Mariah tried different jobs, from hostess to hair sweeper. She entered the world of music as a backup singer.
