Who owned the Rock of Cashel before it was donated to the Catholic Church in Ireland?
Murtough O'Brien or Muircheartach Ua Briain was the King of Munster between 1086 and 1101. In 1101 he asserted his dominance over the other Kings of Ireland and declared himself the High King of Ireland. In that year he donated the Rock of Cashel, the traditional seat for the Kings of Munster, to the Church.
The Rock of Cashel is linked with Saint Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland. Legend has it that the rock was formed when St Patrick cast out Satan from a cave. It is also said to be where he converted the King of Munster in the fifth century. It is also known as Saint Patrick’s rock. Due to it being the traditional seat for the Kings of Munster, it is also known as the Cashel of the Kings.
