This is Michelangelo's masterpiece, David, currently located (2018) at the Accademia gallery in Florence, Italy. It stands just shy of 16 feet (5.16 meters), was sculpted from a single block of marble obtained from the quarries in Carrara, Tuscany, where some of the whitest marble in the world is excavated. It weighs a whopping 12,478 lbs (5660 kg) and originates from the biblical chapter, I Samuel, the story of David and Goliath. Michelangelo worked on it from 1501 - 1504.

Michelangelo (6 March 1475 - 18 February 1564), like so many of the Renaissance masters, became an adept of multiple disciplines. Besides sculpting he was a painter, architect and poet. He was born in Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance during the height of the artistic boom. He is often classified, along with his rival and fellow Florentine, Leonardo Da Vinci, as the archetypal "Renaissance Man". He sculpted two of the artistic treasures of the world, David and the Pieta, before the age of 30. He painted the Sistine chapel in Rome, and at the age of 74, became the replacement architect of St. Peter's Cathedral. Truly an exalted life.
