Duncan Phyfe was a leading cabinetmaker in nineteenth century America. His New York shop and designs were the most sought after by the upper classes. Although not an original designer his fame was gained by reinterpreting and redesigning some of the leading styles of classical furniture styles from the past, like Sheraton's or Hope's, becoming the leading exponent of the neoclassical style in America.

His furniture creations were balanced, symmetrical and reflect a restrained style that became the epitome of New York style in his time. His popularity grew due to the fact that his pieces were affordable and of high quality, compared to others.
