Eleanor of Aquitaine (c. 1122-1204) inherited the duchy of Aquitaine on her father’s death in 1137. In July of that year she married the heir to the French throne, the future King Louis VII. That marriage was annulled in 1152 and two months later she married the duke of Normandy who later became King Henry II of England. Henry and Eleanor’s sons, Richard the Lion Heart and John Lackland, later became kings of England.

When Henry and Eleanor’s sons revolted against Henry in 1173, she provided them with military support. The revolt was not successful and Eleanor was captured and imprisoned until Henry’s death in 1189. She died in 1204 at Fontevrault, Anjou, where she had retired.
