Probably one of the more prominent propaganda personalities, Mildred Gillars was better known as Axis Sally, broadcasting for the Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft (RRG), German State Radio, beginning in 1940. Previously, she taught English for Berlitz, a global leadership training and language education company. Her fiance, Paul Karlson, was killed on the Ostfront (Eastern Front), her broadcasts in the "Home, Sweet Home Hour" program, were designed to demoralize the Allied troops, in which they obviously failed. Her final broadcast was May 6, 1945, two days before Germany surrendered.

Following the war, she was arrested on March 15, 1946 in Berlin and ultimately flown back to the United States on August 21, 1948 to await trial for ten counts of treason. Indicted for only eight counts, her trial on January 25, 1949 resulted in a conviction of only one count of treason for which she was sentenced to 10 to 30 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

She was paroled on June 10, 1961 and died of cancer on June 25, 1988.
