Who was Prime Minister when the UK changed to decimal currency?

Sir Edward Richard George Heath, KG, MBE, PC (9 July 1916 – 17 July 2005), often known as Ted Heath, was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1970 to 1974 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1965 to 1975. He was a strong supporter of the European Communities, and after winning the decisive vote in the House of Commons by 336 to 244, he led the negotiations that culminated in Britain's entry into the European Communities on 1 January 1973.

Heath became Prime Minister after winning the 1970 election. In 1971 he oversaw the decimalisation of British coinage, and in 1972 he reformed Britain's system of local government, reducing the number of local authorities and creating a number of new metropolitan counties. Possibly most significantly, he took Britain into the European Economic Community in 1973.

Albeck1994, the decision to 'go decimal' was first mooted by Sir John Wrottesley in 1824. The Decimal Association was founded in 1841 and the silver florin, a tenth of a pound, was introduced in 1849. The decision to go decimal was taken by Jim Callaghan, then Chancellor, and Harold Wilson, PM, and announced to Parliament in 1966. Nothing to do with joining the EEC (Common Market).

I worked for Barclays Bank in 1971, and D-day was the only occasion, apart from weekends and bank holidays, that banks have been closed in the UK. The reason given was for us bank workers to get prepared for the huge change, but we sat around all day twiddling our thumbs, as we were already well prepared.
