Elmo Lincoln was born Otto Elmo Linkenhelt on February 6, 1889 in Rochester, Indiana.

He got his break into films in 1912 when he caught the eye of legendary producer D.W. Griffith and appeared in several films. It was Griffith who changed his name to Elmo Lincoln.

In 1918 Lincoln received the staring role as Tarzan in "Tarzan of the Apes". The actor originally cast in the role was recalled to active duty when World War I broke out and had to resign.

"Tarzan of the Apes" was a huge success and was one of the first films to gross over one million dollars. He reprised the role in "The Adventures of Tarzan" in 1921

Lincoln died June 27, 1952, Los Angeles, California of Myocardial infarction.
