Felix Dzerzhinsky was the first head of the Soviet Union's secret police force the "Cheka". Dzerzhinsky was nicknamed the "Iron Felix" because of the brutal pogroms he initiated during the mass killings, torture, and oppression known as the "Red Terror" during the Russian Civil War in 1918. Dzerzhinsky was a close confidant to Vladimir Lenin even though Dzerzhinsky opposed Lenin on crucial issues like trade unions, the peace treaty that was forced on the Bolshevik government by the Central Powers that ended Russia's participation in WWI, and nationality policy. Dzerzhinsky died of a heart attack in 1926 after giving a two hour speech denouncing Leon Trotsky.
