Jim Ryun was a Kansas high schooler when he became the first one to break the 4:00 barrier in the mile run in 1964, 10 years after Roger Bannister from England first attained that mark. He later broke the world record for the mile run, with 3:51.1 in 1967, while attending the University of Kansas, a record that stood for 8 years. He went on to serve as a Congressman from Kansas for many years. Tim Danielson and Marty Liquori were the second and third high school students to break 4:00 for the mile, and Matthew Maton was the most recent high school student to do so, in 2015. In all, 8 high school students have broken 4:00 for the mile run.
