As hard as it is to believe, not one grand slam was hit in the first half century of All Star Game play. Then, Fred Lynn of the California Angels ended the drought. This occurred on the 50th anniversary of the Mid-summer Baseball Classic, in the place where it all started in 1933 Comiskey Park, Chicago, Illinois.

In 1983, Lynn in the third inning of the game hit the only grand slam in All Star history; and, he was subsequently named the most valuable player (MVP) of the game. He had been elected to an All Star team for the ninth consecutive time. His actions during this game were greatly appreciated by all in a attendance as noted in local newspapers.
