Wataru "Wat" Misaka was the first non-white player and the first player of Asian descent to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA), known then as the Basketball Association of America. He was selected by the New York Knicks in the 1947 Draft. He debuted as the first non-white player in professional basketball in 1947, the same year that Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color line. The first African American did not play in the NBA until three years later in 1950. Misaka played in three games in the 1947–1948 season before being cut from the team. Misaka believes he was cut because the Knicks had too many guards. He said he did not feel any discrimination during his time with the Knicks, but he was not close to anyone either. He played college basketball at the University of Utah and helped his school win the 1944 NCAA and 1947 NIT championships. Misaka took off two years to serve in the United States Army in the American occupation of Japan.
