It's hard to believe, but it wasn't until the eighth Super Bowl that a running back was named the MVP of the game. Larry Csonka rushed for a then record 145 yards on 33 carries and two touchdowns, leading the Miami Dolphins to their second straight World Championship with a 24-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings at Rice Stadium in Houston.

It was fitting that Csonka win the MVP in the Dolphins third consecutive Super Bowl appearance. The bruising 220-pound fullback had rushed for 112 yards the previous year against the Washington Redskins and many believed he was the MVP of the 14-7 win. However, the honor went to Miami safety Jake Scott, who intercepted two passes including one in the end zone that he returned 55 yards to end a Redskins threat.

Csonka later became famous for leaving the Dolphins with teammates Jim Kiick and Paul Warfield to join the new World Football League. After the WFL folded, Csonka rejoined the NFL with the New York Giants. Csonka was the back who was supposed to receive the handoff from Joe Pisarcik that ended up being fumbled and returned for the winning TD by Eagles defensive back (and current ESPN analyst) Herm Edwards. The play earned the title "The Miracle in The Meadowlands."

There have been just seven running backs to be named Super Bowl MVP, but nine defensive players.

The last running back was Terrell Davis in 1998.

The other running backs were Franco Harris, John Riggins, Marcus Allen, Otis Anderson and Emmitt Smith.
