Who was the first U.S. President to reach the age of 90?

John Adams (October 30 [O.S. October 19] 1735 – July 4, 1826) was an American patriot who served as the second President of the United States (1797–1801) and the first Vice President (1789–97). He was a lawyer, diplomat, statesman, political theorist, and, as a Founding Father, a leader of the movement for American independence from Great Britain. He was also a dedicated diarist and correspondent, particularly with his wife and closest advisor Abigail.

There is a bit of controversy over the date of his birth 19 or 30 October but the year was 1735. On July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, Adams died at his home in Quincy, at approximately 6:20 PM at the age of 91. Thomas Jefferson had died earlier on the same day.

He was several months shy of 91 when he died, which would have made him 90 years old not 91.

To date, only five other Presidents have lived beyond their 90th birthday. The second was depression-era President Herbert Hoover(1874-1964), then in the 2000's the record was reset by Gerald Ford(1913-2006) and Ronald Reagan(1911-2004). Reagan currently holds the record for longest-lived President in American History, but that has already been surpassed by his predecessor Jimmy Carter and successor George Bush, both of whom are still living at 94.
