Sauron, the Evil Maiar, and servant of Morgoth, forged the One Ring during the Second Age. He forged the ring in secret in Orodruin (Mount Doom) in order to rule over the other Rings of Power given to Elves, Dwarves, and Men. When the Elves discovered his treachery, they and the free Men and Dwarves fought against him and his army of Evil.

Sauron was defeated by King Isildur, who cut the ring from his hand and rather than destroy the ring, he claimed it for himself, but the ring of power fell from his finger while swimming in the Gladden River and King Isuldur was killed by Orcs. Hundreds of years later the ring was found by two pre-Hobbits named Deagol and Smeagol. Smeagol quiclky murdered his cousin because he decided that the ring should belong to him. It was his Precious. After being cast out by his people, Smeagol crept into the caves under the Misty Mountains and became the creature Gollum.

During the Third Age, Gollum lost his Precious, and it was found by Bilbo Baggins a Hobbit, and Burglar employed by Thorin and Co. and then passed on to his Nephew Frodo. Frodo was tasked by the wizard Gandalf to destroy the ring by casting it back into Mount Doom, where it was forged. but ultimately, Frodo could not destroy the ring and Gollum, who had become his guide, bit the ring from his finger, and fell into the volcano, destroying himself along with his Precious. Once the ring was finally destroyed Sauron passed away, ending the Great War of the Ring and the Third Age.
