On April 17, 2018, the left engine on Southwest Airlines flight 1380 exploded mid-air, killing one passenger. The Boeing 737 had just departed New York’s LaGuardia Airport en-route to Dallas when the left engine exploded and ruptured metal flew towards a window. It was flying over east Pennsylvania with 143 passengers and five members of crew on board when the left engine suddenly exploded mid air.

Pilot Tammie Jo Shults was the airline pilot who safely landed the plane after a blast tore a hole in it. She is a mother of two and an ex-Navy pilot.

Tammie Jo quickly and calmly brought the plane – with 143 passengers and five crew on board – into land at Philadelphia International at 11am at a descent of 3,000ft per minute.
