Born in December 1972, Patrick Michael Rafter is an Australian former professional tennis player. He reached the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world No. 1 singles ranking in July 1999. His career highlights include consecutive U.S. Open titles in 1997 and 1998. He was the consecutive runner-up at Wimbledon in 2000 and 2001.

During the 2001 Wimbledon Championship Open, unseeded Goran Ivanišević defeated Patrick Rafter 6–3, 3–6, 6–3, 2–6, 9–7 in the men's singles final match to become the gentlemen's singles champion. He became the first wild card to win a major. Before this tournament, Ivanišević was ranked 125th. After Wimbledon with his win, he was ranked 16th.

Concerning Rafter's career, he was the first man to win the Canada Masters, Cincinnati Masters, and the U.S. Open in the same year; he achieved this accomplishment in 1998. This achievement has since become known as the American Summer Slam. At the end of 2002, Rafter retired from the professional tennis tour.
