Who wrote the novella that was the basis for the film 'The Shawshank Redemption'?

'Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption' is a novella by Stephen King, from his 1982 collection 'Different Seasons', subtitled 'Hope Springs Eternal'. It is loosely based on the Leo Tolstoy short story "God Sees the Truth, But Waits". It was adapted for the screen in 1994 as 'The Shawshank Redemption', which was nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1994, including Best Picture. In 2009, it was adapted for the stage as the play 'The Shawshank Redemption'.

Actor Morgan Freeman, who portrayed Red in the film, stated in an interview that this novella is his favorite book.

Great story, great movie. I believe another of the novellas in Diffetent Seasons was also made into a movie...Stand By Me

There have been many good screen adaptations to King's novels and stories. Shawshank is the best of them. Stand By Me is a tie.

Peter Thomas, yes, Stand By Me was the adaptation of the novella The Body. Apt Pupil was also a movie, seems like about 20 years ago. The Breathing Method is the only novella of the four that wasn’t made into a film, but I’ve read that a director has been named and it’s coming
