The Color Purple is a 1985 American period drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Menno Meyjes, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Alice Walker.

Menno Meyjes was born in 1954 in Eindhoven a part of the Netherlands. He is a film director, producer and screenwriter. He moved to the United States in 1972 to study at the San Francisco Art Institute. There he studied with George Kuchar, James Broughton, and Larry Jordan. Three men who are now also known for their film making abilities in the industry.

In 2002, Menno Meyjes wrote and directed the film Max. This film was his directorial debut. With the two films, Max and The Color Purple, they are important ones for Meyjes. He holds these as true high points in his life as part of the film entertainment business.
