When the British military burned the White House and U.S. Capitol on Aug. 24, 1814. British Rear Admiral George Cockburn, who set Washington ablaze, believed there wasn’t a place on the seaboard which we could hold out for any length of time we fought back with a vengeance.

In September of 1814, Soldiers at Fort McHenry in Baltimore Maryland raised a huge American flag to celebrate a victory over British forces during the war that has been going on since 1812. Looking up at the stripes and stars so bright in the battle flashes of light inspired Francis Scott Key to write the song that eventually became the United States national anthem.
