9 erroneous beliefs about world-famous places of interest

Find out the most widespread myths about world-famous sights that we believed were true. Perhaps, they will surprise you too.

Sometimes facts about the most popular places of interest are such an absolute truth for us as the fact that Earth revolves around the Sun. We don't question them, though maybe occasionally we should: some of them are nothing more than just legends or misbeliefs.

Did you know these facts are just misbeliefs? Or maybe you can recall other misperceptions of well-known places that most people believe to be true? Your commentary is welcome!

Common knowledge for most of them. However, Abu-Dhabi Falling Tower was built to look like that, so it shouldn’t count.

The Dead Sea is over 34% minerals. Your figure of 28% is obsolete.

Another one is the fact that the Colosseum in Rome was never called that, it was the Flaviam amphitheatre. Colisseum was a large statue and then it became the area around it. Unfortunately the colossus is long gone and and the name started to be used for the amphitheatre.

The Iguazú falls between Argentina and Brazil are much higher than the Niágara, while the Victoria Falls in África are higher than the Iguazú.

Wouldn’t whether a man made structure being visible from space boil down to how far into space one is? One way or the other, this is very arbitrary.

Anyone worth their salt would know Angel Falls is the highest in the world! It was discovered by Johnny Angel when his plane crashed nearby.

Interesting tidbits. With #8, it depends how you define desert. Most climatologists would define it at about the 10"precipitation isohyet. That being the case, both pictures are in the desert. I assume population pressures in Egypt have increased development there, so the town naturally encroaches. I would argue that the pyramids are still quite impressive when one compares their height and immensity with that of the town.
