The caves were discovered in the 19th century, when an English traveller accompanied by a Maori entered via a raft on the river that runs into the cave. In fact, the Maori knew about the caves but they had never explored far into their depth. Soon after the discovery, the Maori explored the other entrances to the caves and tourists began venturing into the dazzling darkness.
