Pallas's cats: super fluffy and cute wildcats are within an inch of extinction

Conservationists in Russia have decided to designate a 32-square-kilometre (12-square-mile) piece of land inside the Sailyugemsky Nature Park as a sanctuary for the extremely rare and endangered Pallas's cats (Otocolobus manul).

The extremely rare and endangered Pallas's cats are within an inch of extinction. Up to now scientists haven't had much of a chance to study them. So a 32-square-kilometre Nature Park in Russia will help them not only to save these wild cats but also to learn more about these fluffy creatures.

Pallas's cats have small ears and are called "ugly-eared". They are ultra-fluffy and look big, but in fact, they are of much smaller size than they seem to be. A Pallas cat measures about 66 centimeters long, not including the tail, weighs about 4.5 kilograms. Naturally these beautiful cats live isolated in some parts of southern Russia, central China and northern Mongolia.

Right now, in the Sailyugemsky Nature Park an international team of researchers is monitoring Pallas's cat population with the help of video traps. They hope to get an accurate number of population. Now, only time will let us know whether the fluffy Pallas’s cats will reborn.

They are so cute and fluffy but don't let them foolish you. They are still wild and can be very angry and furious when it comes to self protection.

Margie Lewis You'll lose that bet. These cats WERE never domesticated. Otocolobus manul, or Pallas' s cat, is estimated to have diverged from a leopard cat ancestor about 5.19 million years ago and are now classified as "Near Threatened". By the way, the mountain range you mention is called either the Altai or Altay mountains.
