Our appliances and furniture may seem like not the most interesting things in our life, but once you read these 7 cool facts you'll change your opinion about some of them.

#1 The fireplace wasn’t always just a decor choice

For hundreds of years they were essential to survival. Sometimes fireplaces would stay lit for generations so that family members could gather around them for warmth, comfort and food.

#2 Keys weren't always so tiny

Your keys fit neatly into your pocket and sometimes they’re even small enough to get lost in the clutter. But that wasn’t always so.

In ancient Greek and Egyptian times, keys were so massive they would need to be slung over ones shoulder. Some were even as large as three feet.

#3 A couch and a sofa are different things

The words "couch" and "sofa" are often used interchangeably but couches are meant to sit two to three people while sofas are derived from the Arabic “suffah” which was a more formal cushioned bench meant to sit for or more guests.

#4 The bubble wrap that protects your packages was not always intended for safe transportation

In fact, it was initially developed to be textured wallpaper. Yikes, it doesn't sound too aesthetic!

#5 Shoes were considered magic by some Europeans

Back in medieval times, they would be put into walls or under floors in order to ward off evil spirits.

#6 You might get frustrated at having to iron your shirts but some people love it enough to make a skill out of it

#7 Some household appliances are still a bit of a mystery

Everybody knows shoes are magical. They can make you taller, even up that short leg and the ads prove they can make you jump over a small house...for a price. And funny, but couch potato and sofa potato are the same thing.

People used fires to keep warm.... who'd have thought ?? Some people don't like ironing and some people do..... wow !!! These are hardly eye opening facts.

Most of these I already knew. The one about the microwave is what I was hoping to find out more info. It still amazes me how it works! I know what it technically does but what I don't understand is...what's in there that makes it do what it does. Still a mystery to me.

The reason keys were so large was that the mechanism they operated were also large. The technology to make them smaller did not exist.
