I would not trust someone who has their hands behind their back when talking. What are they hiding?

it is not only in indigenous groups, many cultures use eye contact rules that are different from the 'rules' in North America. The most Fluent Liar I know makes excellent eye contact that is how you know not to trust them. There is a lot of truth in body language but it is much more nuanced than these suggestions which all have a suggestion that the action may have another explanation embedded in them .

many aspects of body language are cultural so one should consider that before jumping to conclusions, some are gender oriented as well. for instance, in general, men nod to show agreement agreement, women nod to show they are listening but it shouldn't always be construed as agreement. Also sometimes folded arms over the chest can signal disagreement or anger, other times the person is just cold. So net net, pay attention to words and body language and look for when they are not in harmony with each other.

Margret Thomas, so true. My husband once worked with indigenous children. He often expressed annoyance with "white" teachers, who when talking with these children would demand eye contact. Looking down (not at) was the sign of respect. Those teachers may as swear at them, he would say.
