Which dog breed should the average person NOT own?

Huskies.

They’re one of the world’s most popular dogs. And no shocker there, I mean look. Huskies are gorgeous creatures, known for many lovely qualities. But with that comes a lot of responsibility.

You’ll have to deal with shedding, real bad. They have thick undercoats and if I’m not wrong they’ve also got another layer. Their natural habitat is somewhere cold, ideally snow. Unless you can turn on the AC or your house naturally isn’t hot, then this dog will suffer needlessly.

Hyperactive, enduring dogs, they can’t spend the day lounging about without exercise. Their brain needs stimulation, like all dogs. But this especially applies to the Husky. Bred to be independent, nimble sled-dogs. Not a lazy family life.

Vet and food bills, health problems can also be an issue (true for any pet).

They ‘talk’. Or howl. Makes a lot of noises = not good for neighbors. Can get destructive if boredom takes hold.

Like all dogs, they need a serious commitment from their owner to make both theirs and the owner’s life as happy as possible.

The reasons I stated are because a lot of people purchase huskies without really knowing the requirements or what they’re getting into, and these dogs end up getting abandoned or rehomed (which can be psychologically damaging for them). Husky abandonment is becoming a huge problem.

However, these dogs are beautiful and make wonderful pets and excellent companions, but please do not get them because ‘having a wolf would be so cool’, or ‘I can post funny videos or pics of my dog to get likes!’ or even admiring the dogs from Game of Thrones.

These dogs deserve better than that. They are not the ‘average’ pet you want just for those cute Facebook pictures with your kid.

On a final note, if you have researched well and are certain you want a husky, please consider adoption. There are millions of wonderful huskies just waiting for a cool, loving home.

Annette Hughes, you are sooo wrong! They are very loving and gentle dogs. Of course any animal can turn into a vicious animal if they fall into the hands of cruel and irresponsible humans

My son got a husky on a whim. Saw him as a pup in a pet shop and fell in love immediately. I begged him to do the research but no, got him anyway. He is the most gorgeous beast that that ever lived ( after my own dogs) and I get to have him lots as my son travels. He’s a lot of work but if you stay on top of the grooming, walk/run regularly, find cold spots and keep the food coming then you get it back in spades. Love him to bits and love it when he goes home too. Very popular when walking too. I get stopped constantly to chat about the husky. Kobe has ice blue eyes so extra striking. Big problem in New Zealand. There is two husky rescue groups and both are full. I blame Game of Thrones. Made the breed over popular and many cannot cope with a husky’s needs. The howling is not a problem though. Everyone loves the talking dog and Kobe and I have some great arguments. He always likes the last word!

I don't have the energy necessary to give a dog a good life but do have the time and energy to give a cat everything it wants and needs... Lots of ❤and attention is what my cat gets!

Thank you for posting this. I live in Georgia and know of people who have his Huskies and I feel sorry for them having to deal with this hot Georgia summer weather. This is good information for people wanting to get a husky.

Like any breed, only get the one that suits you, I don't mean the breed you like but the breed you can care for properly. also has a lot to do with training. Even thought breeds have certain characteristics, they also have personalities, Just becasue you like them, only get one you can handle and have time to look after, if you don't have the time and the abilities to look after one properly, get a cat,

Virtually all working breeds should not be kept as pets in urban areas. Because of their energy levels and need to run for hours every day. Too many people think that walking them for an hour a day is good, when for most of these dogs that is barely a warm up!

Also, huskies love to run and are not good at coming back! Thus they are rarely reliable off leash. They also have a high prey drive. They will chase squirrels, rabbits, skunks, porcupines, birds, cats, deer., etc and they will kill it. Its very important to know huskies before you get one!

dellabrodhead, I owned a beautiful all white Akita. His name was Jake. I got him as a puppy…He lived as a family pet for 13 wonderful years. He was an amazing animal…but twice a year for months on end I felt like I was living inside a cotton ball…fur everywhere. He wasn’t one of those dogs that liked strangers to touch him…he would snap. Akitas are had wired to be protective and my Jake was just that. It was like having my own personal Marine. I miss him every day. I look at the photos of these beautiful animals and my heart aches but I am not prepared to deal with another Akita…at my age, 71 years, it is too much work.

Brad Schuh, Then write an article on the dogs you choose. At no point did the writer say that huskies were the "only" high maintenance dogs. I never understand the "But what about....?" comments. Huskies are the subject of this article. I'm sure there are many things to read out there about beagles and pomeranians. Go find them if that's what you want to read about.

I know a lot of people with huskies, but what I didn't know was the howling until... the many TikTok videos with these cuties howling their heads off. We've had labs and their fur sheds a lot but nothing compared to huskies.

Brigitte Greenslade, you are absolutely correct. They are the sweetest, most loving dogs. We lived with a friend who had 4 pit bull mixes. Three girls and one boy. They got along great with our dogs and cats. All stereotypes are just that. Stereotypes. People create killer pitfalls and that is a crime. There are other types of dogs that will attack people with no provocation.

Actually a lot of average responsible people own huskies or other northern breed dogs. They are high maintenance {and accomplished food thieves}. Another then people SHOULD be aware of when adopting a northern dog if you have other animals like a cat....be careful as they tend to view them as prey. If you have a cat it is better to get a puppy so your dog knows cat is part of the pack. I had a Malamute for 12 years adopted from the local pound and will never have another dog as Luka was so amazing and such a character. But yes be prepared for long walks on a daily basis especially when it snows and know your house will never be free of dog hair.

Like a Husky Akitas are dogs that people purchase and return to shelters or worse let go on the streets. You really need to know what you are getting yourself into before purchasing any breed regardless of what it is. I have owned two Akita’s and did extensive research before purchasing them. They have two coats and shed twice a year, they are hard to train, they are adapt to one person as there alpha, they have lots of energy and are highly intelligent, they are very sweet and loyal, very good with children when trained, highly susceptible to bloat and many other things you learn along the way. If you don’t know these things before purchasing these wonderful animals people don’t want or tend to want to put the time needed to deal with them and in the end have to get rid of them. This leaves rescues overwhelmed and these wonderful animals on the streets left at the mercy of traffic, hunters who don’t have a heart and worse. So please do your research before purchasing your fur babies you will be glad you did. ❤️❤️❤️

Annette Hughes, not true at all. If they are raised properly they are wonderful and truly great family dogs. I know from personal experience.

What about beagles or pomeranians? Beagles are hyper and pomeranians are way to expensive
