Many animals can swim. The great horned owl, common in the Americas, is no exception, although seeing this bird swimming is a really rare and unusual sight.

A group of tourists made their way through one of the canyons near Lake Powell, when suddenly they saw a swimming eagle-owl in one of the small flooded areas.

Most likely, a young bird accidentally fell into the water because of a lack of experience during hunting at low altitude. To continue flying, the owl needs some time to dry the feathers. Judging by the look of the owl, the bird was not happy with people who captured it in such a vulnerable position.

This was a very sad sight. If this poor bird had not found land in that canyon it most likely would have drowned. The only thing that saved it was the people following it who just happened to frightened the bird enough to make it try to get away. I just hope the people would have come to the rescue had the bird faltered and gone under.

I watched a Golden Eagle swimming in a pond in Mexico. There was apparently nothing wrong,as he swam out,preened his feathers and took flight. We later saw him,or one very much like him fighting a Cara-Cara bird over a huge Rattlesnake.

They enjoy migratory protection. As many times before, I would have just picked it up, checked for injury and put it on dry land. Looked to be in good shape, but maybe could work on its stroke.

It was likely swimming to try and get to safety. I don’t think they do it for enjoyment. It couldn’t fly afterward because its feathers were too wet and needed to dry.
