The official title of the USA Patriot Act is "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT) Act of 2001". The main purpose of this Act is to improve the abilities of U.S. law enforcement to detect and deter terrorism. One key to the Act is that it tore down the wall between law enforcement and intelligence officials so that they could share information and work together to help prevent terror attacks. It has also led to increased penalties for committing and supporting terrorist crimes.

America and the world have noted that terrorists have not lost the will or the ability to attack others. The USA Patriot Act is vital to the war on terror and defending US citizens against any type of ruthless enemy. This bill allows American law enforcement officials to continue to use the same tools against terrorists that are used against organized crime enterprises, drug dealers, cyber threats, and other criminals, while safeguarding the civil liberties of Americans and other people living in the USA.

Shelley Welch Dunivan, What you fail to understand in asking your question is that he Patriot Act is another piece of legislation that serves to chip away at our civil liberties. Little by little we give up rights and freedom out of fear. What are we fighting for if we give up the freedoms we are so proud of out of fear. To quote Benjamin Franklin, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

William Laughlin, read what you just wrote. Now answer this...haven't I seen you ranting about gun legislation on here? I'm not Republican or Democrat, but I do see that it's typically the Democrats who are hypocritical, and constantly want to amend the Constitution. So, while I'm neither, I DEFINITELY don't want to be one of those! You claim to be a free thinker. But you just agree with what your party tells you to, just like everyone else. The problem is that when you think freely, you're bound to contradict your party on certain things. And for some, political affiliation is such a big part of their self-identity that they revert back to what the party has to say about it for self-validation, or another reason. I lean conservative, but I disagree with Republicans on many things. I just happen to agree with Republicans more often. Both parties are just using different tactics to gain more votes to exercise more control. If you look past the BS with immigration, you see that the immigrants will likely vote Democrat, so Democrats say "Let them in!" and claim it's about human rights. The Republicans see that it hurts their chances at being powerful and say, "No, keep them out!" They claim it's about drugs, sex trafficking, and the cartel. It's not about what either side claims. It's about formulating strategies to get the most votes to exercise control and have power. Not to toot my own horn (toot toot), but this is what free thinking actually looks like.
