The 1980 film "The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu" was released a short time after Peter Sellers death. He died in July 1980 from a heart attack while at a hotel in London. He was 54 at the time of his death.

Sellers portrayed the two main characters, Dr. Fu Manchu, a "Chinese evil genius" and criminal mastermind, as well as retired detective Nayland Smith, the longtime nemesis of Dr. Fu Manchu. Set in the early 1930s, the plot of the movie entails Dr. Fu Manchu gathering ingredients for an "elixir of life" after the original sample was used by a henchman. Theft of the diamond "Star of Leningrad", kidnapping of a police constable impersonating Queen Mary and a break-in at the Tower of London are all attempts by Dr. Fu Manchu to obtain the ingredients. In the end Dr. Fu Manchu prevails by recreating the elixir and is rejuvenated to a more youthful state.

The movie did not fare well in theaters or with movie critics.
