There have been eight people to get this honor. Honorary citizenship has none of the rights or protections as that of actual citizenship.

The first person to receive the honor was Winston Churchill in 1963, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during WWII. Mr. Churchill is one of only two recipients to received the honor during their lifetime.

Next was Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who rescued thousands of Jews from the Holocaust. He was awarded his citizenship posthumously in 1981.

The third and fourth recipients of this honor are William and Hannah Penn. William founded the Province of Pennsylvania and after he became unable to continue, his wife, Hannah, took over as administrator. They were awarded the honor in 1984.

The fifth to recipient is also the second person to receive the honor in their lifetime. Mother Teresa was a Catholic nun who spent a lifetime dedicated to working with the poorest of the poor. She was honored with citizenship in 1996.

The sixth recipient is Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, a Frenchman who helped us in the American Revolution. He was posthumously given the honor in 2002.

Seven is Casimir Pulaski, known as "the Father of the American Calvary". He fought and died during the American Revolution and was honored in 2009.

Finally the eighth person is Bernardo de Galvez, who during the American Revolution sent supplies and intelligence to the Americans by way of Louisiana. He was honored in 2014.
