Kinshasa, formerly Léopoldville, is the capital and the largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Once a site of fishing and trading villages situated along the Congo River, Kinshasa is now one of the world's fastest growing megacities.

The Congo River, formerly also known as the Zaire River, is the second longest river in Africa, shorter only than the Nile.

The name Congo/Kongo river originates from the Kingdom of Kongo once located on the southern bank of the river. The kingdom in turn was named for the indigenous Bantu Kongo people, known in the 17th century as "Esikongo".
