Spencer Tracy was nominated for nine Academy Awards for Best Actor; a category record he holds with Laurence Olivier. He was the first of nine actors to win the award twice, and is one of two actors to receive it consecutively, the other being Tom Hanks.

In 1937 and 1938, he won consecutive Oscars for Captains Courageous and Boys Town.

My favorite Spencer Tracy role -- the craggy attorney Henry Drummond in "Inherit the Wind". A fictionalized version of the Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925 Tennessee. The character was clearly Clarence Darrow, the great defense lawyer, here defending a teacher's right to teach true science, Darwinian evolution, against backwoods-hillbilly fundamentalist ignorance and religious-fanaticism. A brilliantly-limbed portrait of a thoughtful, dedicated seeker of truth and fact (he lost to Burt Lancaster -- another great, intelligent actor -- in "Elmer Gantry")

Actor Spencer Tracy, has been credited for winning Academy Awards for the movies San Francisco & Father of the Bride. I think personally, he should have won for the 1967 film "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?" starring his real life love Katherine Hepburn & Sidney Poitier. Unfortunately, it was his last film before passing away in life.

The whole thing was a set up by town boosters. Scopes wasn't even in the classroom when the subject was taught, but agreed to help test the law. The town businessmen even paid his $100 fine.
