Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen (born September 23, 1949) was born and raised in New Jersey, U.S.A.. He is a singer, songwriter and musician who is both a solo artist and the leader of the E Street Band. He has sold more than 135 million records worldwide and more than 64 million records in the United States, making him one of the world's best-selling music artists.

By the late 1970s, Springsteen had earned a reputation in the pop world as a songwriter whose material could provide hits for other bands. Manfred Mann's Earth Band had achieved a U.S. Billboard Hot 100 No.1 pop hit with a version of "Blinded by the Light" in early 1977 (from “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.”, Springsteen’s debut studio album). Manfred Mann's Earth Band's recording of the song changes the original lyrics, most prominently in the chorus, where Springsteen's "cut loose like a deuce" is replaced with "revved up like a deuce". This is commonly misheard as "wrapped up like a douche", a well-known mondegreen. The lyric is a reference to a hot rod "deuce coupe". Springsteen was fond of classic hot rods in his youth, hence the line "cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night".

Despite 11 No.1 Albums in the U.S., numerous achievements, nominations and awards – Presidential Medal of Freedom, Academy, American Music, Brit Awards, Emmy, Grammy, Tony etc. – Springsteen’s only song to achieve Billboard Hot 100 No.1 single status is Manfred Mann’s Earth Band cover of “Blinded by the Light”.
