Seychelles is an archipelago country in the Indian Ocean. The capital of the 115-island country, Victoria, lies 1,500 kilometres (932 mi) east of mainland East Africa. Silhouette Island lies 20 km (12 mi) northwest of Mahé in Seychelles.

Silhouette has an area of 20.1 km2 and has a population of 200, mostly workers on the island. The main settlement is La Passe, where Hilton Hotel is located.

Other nearby countries and territories include Comoros, Madagascar, and Mauritius to the south; as well as the Maldives and Chagos Archipelago to the east. With a population of roughly 94,367, it has the smallest population of any sovereign African country.

Seychelles is a member of the African Union, the Southern African Development Community, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the United Nations.

The crew of an English East India Company vessel, the 'Ascension', were the first humans known to step ashore in 1609.

Seychelles has developed from an agricultural society to a market-based economy, with agriculture being supplanted by rapidly rising service and public sectors as well as tourism.

In the late 2010s, President Danny Faure and the National Assembly presented plans to encourage foreign investment in order to further upgrade these sectors.

Despite the country's newfound economic prosperity, poverty remains widespread, and there is a high level of economic inequality, one of the highest in the world.
