John Tyler (March 29, 1790 – January 18, 1862) was the tenth president of the United States from 1841 to 1845.

Tyler fathered the most children of any president with 8 children by his first wife Letitia Christian Tyler. When he became a widower, he went on to marry his second wife, Julia Gardiner Tyler, with whom he had 7 children. He allegedly had a further son by a slave but the veracity of that is unclear and the record shows him as having fathered 15 children rather than 16.

William Henry Harrison fathered 10 children while Rutherford Birchard Hayes had 8. Thomas Jefferson fathered 6 children and allegedly had 6 more, possibly 7, by Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman of mixed race owned by Jefferson, and the half sister of Jefferson’s wife, Martha.

Tyler was elected to the vice presidency along with President William Henry Harrison, becoming president after Harrison's death in April 1841, only a month into the new administration. As he inherited the presidency rather than gain it through the popular vote, many referred to him as "the accidental president" or "His Accidency".

After his death in 1862 Tyler was the only president not to be officially recognized in Washington, D.C. because of his loyalty to the Confederacy, states' rights and opposition to any concentration of federal power. His coffin was covered with the Confederate flag. He is the only U.S. president ever to be buried and honoured ceremoniously under a flag that is not the United States flag.
