Born on 18th July 1921, John Herschel Glenn Jr. was a United States Marine Corps aviator, engineer, astronaut, businessman and politician. He was the third American in space, and the first American to orbit the Earth, circling it three times in 1962. Following his retirement from NASA, he served from 1974 to 1999 as a Democratic United States Senator from Ohio. In 1998, he flew into space again at age 77, thus becoming the oldest man in space.

On 20th February 1997, Glenn announced that his retirement from the Senate would occur at the end of his term in January 1999. Glenn retired due to his age, saying "There is still no cure for the common birthday."

John Glenn passed away on 8th December 2016, aged 95.
