‘NCIS’ is an American TV series, featuring Mark Harmon (born 1951), an American actor, producer, director and former football quarterback. He plays the lead role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in ‘NCIS”.

The TV series was a spin-off from ‘JAG’, that premiered in the fall of 2003 on CBS. To date, it has entered into the 19th full season and has gone into broadcast syndication on the USA Network. The TV show genre is considered action-oriented with a military and civilian theme, spiked with a police procedural bent.

Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill are co-creators and executive producers of the premier member of the ‘NCIS’ franchise. As of 2021, it is the second-longest-running scripted, non-animated, U.S. Primetime TV series currently airing.

Originally the series had a partially redundant title ‘Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service’; this was later shortened to ‘NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service’ and then to ‘NCIS’.

The TV series theme follows a fictional team of special agents based at the Washington, D.C. field office in Washington Navy Yard led by the Marine veteran Gibbs. Running time ranges from 39-44 minutes for each episode.

Today, spin-off TV series include. ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’, ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ and ‘NCIS: Hawai’i’.
