Jim Sheridan is an Irish playwright, screenwriter, film director, and film producer. He was born in Dublin, Ireland on 6 February 1949. He is the brother of playwright Peter Sheridan. Between 1989 and 1993, Sheridan directed two critically acclaimed films set in Ireland, "My Left Foot" and "In the Name of the Father", and later directed the films "The Boxer" and "In America".

Sheridan has received six Academy Award nominations. In 1990, he received two nominations for the 'Best Director' as well as for the 'Best Adapted Screenplay' (as co-writer) for the film "My Left Foot". In 1994, he received three nominations for the 'Best Director', 'Best Picture' and the 'Best Adapted Screenplay' (as co-writer) for the film "In the Name of the Father". In 2004, he received the nomination for 'Best Original Screenplay' (as co-writer) for the film "In America". Unfortunately, Sheridan has not won any Oscar to date.
