Joe Gibbs is the only American National Football League (NFL) head coach to win 3 Super Bowls with 3 different starting quarterbacks. They were Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien.

In Super Bowl XVII, concerning the strike-shortened 1982 season, the Washington Redskins defeated the Miami Dolphins 27–17 to win their first Super Bowl championship. The game was played in January 1983 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. Joe Theismann was the Redskins quarterback.

In Super Bowl XXII, the Redskins defeated the Denver Broncos by the score of 42–10, winning their 2nd Super Bowl. The game was played at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, CA in January 1988. Doug Williams was the Redskins starting quarterback, the first African American to start and win a Super Bowl game.

For their 3rd time as a team under NFL head coach Gibbs, the Redskins went to Super Bowl XXVI. The game marked the end of the 1991 season and was held in January 1992 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN. The Redskins defeated the Buffalo Bills by a score of 37–24. The starting quarterback for the Redskins was Mark Rypien; he was Gibbs' 3rd different Super Bowl starting quarterback.

Gibbs (b. November 1940 in Mocksville, NC) served as a college and pro football assistant for 15 seasons before winning his first head coaching job with the 1981 Washington Redskins. In 12 years, he compiled a 124-60-0 retirement record for regular-season games and a 16-5 record in 21 postseason games.
