Morocco has recently opened Africa’s largest port after nine years in construction. Morocco’s $1.3bn Tanger Med 2 port has opened 1 July 2019, making it the largest port both in Africa and the Mediterranean, and one of the 20 largest ports in the world. Other mega ports in Africa would be Durban South Africa, Port of Richards Bay South Africa and Kenya Mombasa.

The second and final phase of the project was to construct 1.6km of docks and an automated container terminal which has recently been completed as of June 2019. The terminal will add an additional 5 million containers a year to the capacity of the existing Tanger Med port, creating a “mega-hub” with the ability to handle up to 9 million containers.

The other mega ports in Africa can be found in the eastern South part of the country, Port of Mombasa, Kenya and the Port of Richards Bay, South Africa.
