The history of America saw more than 2,000 governors, and Barack Obama is the 44th American President. Seventeen presidents (almost 40%) had previously held office as chief executive of a state. Many presidents of the USA also served as state governors before their presidency. So did Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States.

Jimmy was raised in rural Georgia. The future president became the first member of the Carter family to graduate from high school. He used to be a peanut farmer, continuing the family tradition. Jimmy even gave up his military career to save Carters' farm. He got involved in local politics as a member of the education board, later becoming a Georgia State Senator. Carter became the governor of Georgia in 1971 and served until 1975. His presidential term started on the 20th of January, 1977.
