Following the partition of British India in 1947, the country was divided into two independent dominions: India and Pakistan. The southern port city of Karachi became Pakistan's first national capital. In 1959, the capital was temporarily moved to Rawalpindi, then permanently to the city of Islamabad in 1967.

Meaning "pure land," Pakistan is a compilation of five former regions of British India: Punjab, Afghania, Kashmir, Sindh and Balochistan. Karachi is located in the province of Sindh.

Sometimes known as the 'City of Lights', Karachi is the largest Muslim city in the world. Although it is no longer the capital, it remains the financial and commercial centre of Pakistan. Karachi has two important regional seaports and makes the largest share of Pakistan's GDP (gross domestic product) and national revenue.

Karachi is home to Pakistan and South Asia's largest shopping mall, 'Lucky One Mall'. It has several museums of national importance, including the National Museum of Pakistan and Mohatta Palace.
