"Obsession", a 1976 neo-noir psychological thriller film, "Casualties of War", a 1989 controversial war drama, and "Carlito's Way", a 1993 American crime drama film were all directed by Brian De Palma (b. September 1940 in Newark, New Jersey). He did not direct "At Close Range" (1986).

Sean Penn co-stars opposite his late brother Chris Penn as well as Christopher Walken in the gritty crime film "At Close Range", the sophomore effort from director James Foley (b. December 1953 in Brooklyn, New York). Brian De Palma's big drama "Casualties of War" features one of the most demanding roles of Sean Penn's career.

The movie "At Close Range" is set in 1978 Pennsylvania, and the film follows two wayward teenagers heading down the wrong path in the absence of their father. However, when Brad Sr. (Walken) returns to town, his sons Tommy (Chris) and Brad Jr. (Sean) can't help but become enamored by his life of violent crime.

"At Close Range" was produced by Don Guest and Elliott Lewittis and was based on the real life experiences of a rural Pennsylvania crime family led by Bruce Johnston Sr., operating during the 1960s and 1970s. Besides the top stars, it features Mary Stuart Masterson, David Strathairn, Crispin Glover, Kiefer Sutherland, and Eileen Ryan.

Despite very good film reviews, the movie was not a box office success. It grossed a total of $2.3 million in the North American in a theatrical run in 83 theaters, earning less than its production budget of $6.5 million.
