Can you name the author of the controversial novel "Lolita"?

Why no comments? This kind of deviant behavior was not talked about in our history. And I think that is one of the reasons it is epidemic today. Adults having sex with children is WRONG!

Sure it's wrong. That's my grandbaby to the left--I'd kill anyone that messed with her. But LOLITA does not paint Humbert in flattering colors. It is a masterful dissection of a deviant and narcissistic personality--sort of like a Republicn, you know--and that you or I anyone is offended by it is not reason enough to violate the 1st amendment--you know, the one that allows people to say what they will, however stupid or smart. That right is more valuable than your outrage.

Lolita is one of the most misunderstood novels in literature. As someone below me said, Humbert Humbert is not painted in the best of colors. The point of the novel is that he is meant to be an extremely unreliable narrator, who is using his silver tongue of romantic language to trick his readers into thinking that he is, in fact, a good man. However, Nabokov makes the writing so eloquent and so solid that his trickery is not meant to convince the readers but instead, make them question H.H's every move and descision. Nabokov was in love with chess and the rules of the game and once said in an interview that he tried to make his books like a game of chess to fool the readers who didn't look close enough. It's really a brilliant novel. I wrote a 27 page paper in college about Lolita and the certain ways Nabokov has H.H trick his readers and the unreliability of the narrator so I could go on for hours about it's brilliance but I'll just stop here for the sake of time.

Steven Nelson Well, I don't think there is any condoning of Humbert and Lolita's sexual relationship. What Humbert does is disgusting and deplorable, and there is no condoning of it but that's the thing – Nabokov never does. He makes Humbert try to condone HIMSELF which just adds to the unreliablility of the narrator and causes the readers to lose trust in him. That's where the beauty of the novel lies. It's also arguable whether or not Quilty, Lolita's other older "lover", actually exists or is just Humbert's psychological "double" that he creates. It's complete brilliance. Though I do agree that the book is most definitely designed to make us reflect on our own disbeliefs and behavior.

I don't believe in censoring writers or banning books. I don't have to buy a copy or even read it. Which I won't. Not only is adults having sex with children, it's disgusting!

Chris Plassman It was not a case of mis-spelling, just fingers too fast for the computer. As a pianist, I have the same problem and must doublecheck entries constantly. Party affiliation aside, I also believe in free and open speech, barring profanity, no matter the disagreeable subject matter. Secrecy only perpetuates certain behaviors. Let the light shine upon the subject.

akaumbra, I guess you'd be in favor of banning the Bible on the same grounds, such as Lot's daughters getting him drunk in order to take advantage of him. Or maybe you can make a choice to read a book before passing judgment on it. Or maybe you can make a choice not to read a book whose subject matter you find disagreeable. Or maybe you can learn how to consider things with which you don't agree without necessarily having to accept them. Consider how boring life would be if all six billion human beings on this planet were required to conform to your personal, arbitrary beliefs. Since I'm sure that's where you would go with your rebuttal, I don't support adults taking advantage of children below the age of consent, but that does not mean I support banning books.
