Denzel Washington did not have any kind of role in the 2006 film "The Pursuit of Happyness". In this movie, life is a struggle for single father Chris Gardner (Will Smith). Evicted from his apartment with his young son (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith), the two find themselves alone with no place to go. Even though Chris eventually lands a job as an intern at a prestigious brokerage firm, the position pays no money. The pair live in shelters and endure many hardships. Chris refuses however to give in to despair. He finds the strength to struggle to create a better life for himself and his son.

"The Pursuit of Happyness" is an American biographical drama, directed by Gabriele Muccino. Besides starring Smith as a homeless salesman and Smith's son Jaden, making his film debut, other cast members are Thandiwe Newton as Linda Gardner, Brian Howe as Jay Twistle, Dan Castellaneta as Alan Frakesh, Kurt Fuller as Walter Ribbon, James Karen as Martin Frohm, Takayo Fischer as Mrs. Chu, Mark Christopher Lawrence as Wayne, and Chris Gardner as a man walking in a business suit.

The film's screenplay by Steven Conrad is based on the best-selling 2006 memoir of the same name written by Chris Gardner and Quincy Troupe. It is based on Gardner's nearly one-year struggle being homeless. The unusual spelling of the film's title came from a mural that Gardner saw on the wall outside the daycare facility his son attended.

The film also received great acclaim and was a big box office success.
