Do adult men and women have Adam's apples?
We are your personal mythbusters. Both males and females have it, but most people consider it a characteristic masculine feature. The thing is that a man has a bigger Adam's apple as its size increases considerably during man's teen ages. That is why it seems like adult women don't have it at all!

Easy mistake. Too bad they didn't explain further.
"The structure of the laryngeal prominence forms a bump under the skin. It is larger in adult men, in whom it is usually clearly visible and palpable. In women, the bump is much less visible and is hardly perceived on the upper edge of the thyroid cartilage.
The meeting point of the two portions of the cartilage generally forms an acute angle (of about 90°) in men, while in women it forms an open arc (of about 120°).
Although both sexes have it, the Adam's apple is considered to be a characteristic feature of adult men, because its size tends to increase considerably during puberty.
Its development is considered a secondary sexual characteristic of males that appears as a result of hormonal activity. Its level of development varies among individuals and the widening of that area in the larynx can occur very suddenly and quickly.
The laryngeal prominence is more prominent in adult males than in females because of the difference in the size of the angle: 90° in males and 120° in females."

I am not at all enamoured by the explanation given. (I also abhor yes/no questions but that's a topic for review questions, not ones that have somehow passed.) Anyway, IMHO, here is a much better explanation: Adam's apples are found on both women and men they just show up more prominently in men as a chunk of bony cartilage that's wrapped around the larynx. Also known as the laryngeal prominence, the Adam's apple sits right on top of the thyroid gland, so the area is fittingly called the thyroid cartilage.

Sorry - women and men have larynxes. The Adam's apple is a characteristic bump on a man's throat - so the question is very poorly asked and also not well answered.

Then women would have Eve's apples, which are smaller.

When the larynx ("voice box") grows larger during puberty, it sticks out at the front of the throat. This is what's called an Adam's apple. Everyone's larynx grows during puberty, but a girl's larynx doesn't grow as much as a boy's does. That's why boys have Adam's apples.

Kristen Richardson, thank you for a sensible response and explanation. Have read through the other answers/responses,some of which left me wondering. Everybody has a larynx or voice box [common name for it when i was a child], so I wonder where some of these answers came from..!! Yours makes perfect sense. Thank you.
